History
1909
Jacques-Marie and Charles Stulemeijer see potential in prestigious construction projects in Belgium and set up the Société Belge des Bétons (SBB). They immediately earn their reward with the rebuilding of Belgian ports and canals, in the aftermath of the war.
1922
SBB looks beyond the Belgian borders and sets up a subsidiary in France (Nord-France) and in Spain (SICOP).
1947
SBB recognizes the extraordinary market potential in former Belgian Congo and, together with the Belgian Group Empain, creates a common subsidiary Auxeltra-Béton.
1966
Large projects in the Middle East demand a new organization. The six companies of the SBB Group form Six Construct. The success in this new region is considerable.
1973
SBB becomes a holding company and the shareholder of the newly created construction companies, Les Entreprises SBBM and Six Construct International. The list of references in the Middle East and Africa grows incredibly fast. Meanwhile, the company carries out important infrastructure works in Belgium.
1982-1989
1982 - Belgium becomes a federal state. SBB evolves by taking over companies in the three regions: Entreprises Jacques Delens in Brussels, Etablissements Jean Wust in Wallonia and Vanhout in Flanders. Les Entreprises SBBM and Six Construct International unite their powers and become Les Entreprises SBBM & Six Construct. New activities are initiated in Luxembourg.
1989 - The Group penetrates the East European market, first with Russia, then Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Netherlands get a permanent office.
1994
Les Entreprises SBBM & Six Construct henceforth will go by the name of BESIX. The activities in the Middle East develop further and BESIX enters the Egyptian and Libyan markets. The company also becomes an important player in France.
2004
Thirteen managers of BESIX and its subsidiaries, together with Orascom Construction Industries, execute a management buy-out. SBB becomes BESIX Group, firmly anchored in Belgium.
2006
Five companies join the BESIX Group: Van Britsom (Oostkamp), Verheye (Diksmuide), GRWestkust (Diksmuide) (50%), Socogetra (Awenne) and Cobelba (Naninne).
