I did a 7-week internship at BESIX. I’m studying at Ghent University and looking forward to graduating next year in Industrial Sciences in Civil Engineering.
This picture was taken on the 43rd floor of the most left tower at The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences (there are six of them in total!). Standing next to me is Guillaume Neyrinck, a fellow intern, standing behind the camera is Art Bleukx, the Procurement Manager of this project.
This wasn’t our first time at The Royal Atlantis. We already visited the site in 2018, during a field trip organised by the university. Art guided our group around on-site and we went out for brunch with some BESIX colleagues. Afterwards, we asked Art for a private tour and he was glad to do so.
Back then, I remember being in awe of the size of the project and the number of people working on it. So much going on! As a child, you often remember something being huge, but looking back as an adult, that same thing seems much less impressive. Not the case for this project! I was again blown away. Also by the engineering of it. The building contained many parts that hadn’t been constructed before in the world. For that, the team needed to find completely new methods to build those parts, how fascinating is that!
I did my internship in Umm Al Quwain, on the Old Town Waterfront Development project. It was my first experience with marine works. Personally, I believe this is a very interesting part of construction. It was an enormous project in terms of size, but less in terms of people. If I had the chance, I’d love to work in marine works or offshore. My dream project? It would be one that captures the attention worldwide, such as The Burj Khalifa, The Royal Atlantis, The Dubai Creek Tower, etc.
