BESIX Watpac designs and builds Woolworths’ distribution centre in Sydney

BESIX Watpac builds the Woolworths Sydney Chilled and Fresh Distribution Centre in Australia, the largest temperature-controlled distribution centre in the Southern Hemisphere.

BESIX Watpac is designing and constructing the Woolworths Sydney Chilled and Fresh Distribution Centre in Eastern Creek, Australia. Spanning more than 93,000m², this facility is set to become the largest multi-storey, temperature-controlled distribution centre in the Southern Hemisphere.

Multi-level warehousing to boost Woolworths’ reliable distribution

The project features chilled and fresh warehousing across two floors, ancillary buildings, office space, and a four-storey above-ground car park with 762 car spaces and heavy vehicle parking. In addition, 23,607 m² of solar panels will be installed to partially power the facility.

Once operational, the site will handle over 6,000 tonnes of fruit, vegetables and chilled product daily, ensuring fresh products are supplied to customers within Sydney, Canberra and Regional New South Wales. In addition, it will allow Woolworths to extend the shelf life of fresh fruit and vegetables to reduce food waste through utilising the latest refrigeration technology.

Boost for local employment

During the construction phase, the project generates more than 4,000 local jobs and partner up with a great number of local business. Additionally, the facility will employ up to 700 people once operational in 2027.

“We are looking forward to delivering this cutting-edge facility for Woolworths Group. It’s great to see our experienced team bring its expertise here, many of whom are Western Sydney locals. Procuring a lot of our trades through the local workforce and subcontractors makes it even more exciting for our organisation, particularly on a project of this size and scale." – Mark Baker, CEO BESIX Watpac

Strategic location for efficient transport

Strategically situated at a motorway intersection in West-Sydney, the facility will enhance efficiency for suppliers and transport operators, supporting Woolworths' ongoing growth and commitment to delivering fresh produce and chilled goods to customers across New South Wales.

“Woolworths is committed to bringing our customers the best of Australian fresh, and this new distribution centre is a big step in that direction, as well as being a safer, more modern facility for our team to work in,” says Ralph Kemmler, Managing Director of Property at Woolworths Group. “Together with our build partners BESIX Watpac, we are developing important supply chain infrastructure, which will meet both the future growth and the expectations of our customers.”
