Scheldt Tunnel reaches new milestone: Left and Right Bank now connected

In Antwerp, the doors between the final two elements of the Scheldt Tunnel have been opened. It marks both a symbolic and technical milestone, as this is the first time a continuous connection between both banks of the River Scheldt has been physically possible.

A major step in a complex infrastructure project

On 19 February 2026, TM COTU* opened the doors between the Scheldt Tunnel’s 7th and 8th elements. From this moment, all eight tunnel elements form one uninterrupted structure.

After the immersion works, a gap of around two metres remained between elements seven and eight. This space is now being filled with the closure joint, a technically critical component constructed on site. The opening of the doors followed the installation and drying of the formwork required for this joint.

We are quite literally standing at the crossroads of years of effort and collaboration. This moment gives us strong motivation to bring the remaining works to a successful conclusion and deliver a tunnel that Antwerp and the whole of Flanders can be proud of.

Next steps in the construction of the Scheldt Tunnel

In the coming months, the closure joint will be completed and the remaining bulkheads removed. These temporary walls kept the elements watertight and airtight during transport and immersion. They have already been removed in the first sections, with the others to follow shortly. Once all bulkheads are removed, we no longer speak of eight separate parts, but of one continuous Scheldt Tunnel.

Thereafter, the project moves into its finishing phase: internal roadways will be built, and all technical systems will be installed. Step by step, TM COTU is progressing towards a safe, smooth and future‑proof connection beneath the Scheldt.

A vital link in the Oosterweel project

The Scheldt Tunnel is a key component of the Oosterweel Link. It connects the Left Bank with the Noordkasteel area on the Right Bank and will link up with the future Oosterweel Junction. The tunnel will have two traffic tubes for motorists, an evacuation tube and a six‑metre‑wide cycle tube. The opening will take place in phases: cyclists from 2028, motorised traffic from 2030. The full Oosterweel Link is set for completion in 2033.

* TM COTU stands for Tijdelijke Maatschap Combinatie Oosterweeltunnel, a consortium comprising BESIX, Stadsbader Contractors, DEME and Jan De Nul.
