What you learn in one year at BESIX

From intern to Site Superintendent, Florian’s first year at BESIX brings hands‑on learning, mobility and early responsibility on a Saudi stadium project.

From playing with toy cranes to Site Superintendent at BESIX

Growing up, Florian didn’t just play with toy cranes; he understood how they worked. His fascination with construction started early, nurtured by a father who brought home stories from construction sites rather than bedtime tales.

Today, Florian is living that childhood dream. As a Site Superintendent at BESIX, he’s part of the team behind one of Saudi Arabia’s most iconic new infrastructure projects. We caught up with him between site meetings to talk about his journey, what still surprises him, and what advice he’d give to engineers just starting out.

Like father, like son

“My dad worked in the industry, so I was exposed to construction sites from a young age,” Florian recalls. “Some kids grew up watching cartoons. I was watching cranes and concrete pumps! I always knew I’d end up in construction. I just didn’t know where it would take me.”

After earning two bachelor's degrees in Belgium, one in real estate and one in construction, Florian was eager to explore the international side of construction, something BESIX is known for. “What drew me to BESIX wasn’t just the scale of the projects,” he explains, “but the way you can move between countries, roles, and responsibilities as your career evolves.”

First taste, lasting impression

Before joining BESIX full-time, Florian had the chance to explore different sides of the Group as an intern, and those early experiences made all the difference. He interned first at BESIX RED, the Group’s real estate development arm. Later during his studies, he also interned at Socogetra, BESIX’s regional infrastructure affiliate in Wallonia, where he discovered the pace and precision of civil works.

“It gave me a 360-degree view of the industry,” he says. “And it confirmed that I wanted to be part of this ecosystem.” Florian’s path isn’t unique: every year, BESIX in Belgium hires around 30 starters. In 2025, half of them did an internship somewhere in the Group prior to signing their contract.

Bridging design and delivery on site

Today, Florian works as a Site Superintendent on the Aramco Stadium project in Khobar, where he is responsible for all finishing works on Level 2 of the stadium: painting, tiling, furniture installation, and more. “My role is to make sure that what's been designed actually gets built correctly, safely, and on time,” he says.

That means constant coordination between teams, follow-up with subcontractors, and a sharp eye for detail. “Every day brings new challenges,” he adds. “But seeing a space take shape from bare concrete to a finished room, is incredibly satisfying.”

My biggest lesson so far? The site teaches you fast. You learn to manage people, spot issues early, and make decisions under pressure. It’s demanding, but real… and I love that!

A team that makes a difference

Asked what makes BESIX stand out, Florian doesn’t hesitate: “The team. It’s truly international, but also close-knit. We work hard, but there’s humour, support, and shared pride.”

That support also translates into mobility. In just a few years, Florian has gone from graduate to key team member on a major international project. “I’ve grown more in a year here than I thought possible. You’re trusted early, but never left on your own.”

Advice for young engineers?

Florian’s message to students and recent grads is simple: “Don’t just wait to be told what to do. Go to the site. Ask questions. Speak to the people who’ve done it before you; they’re often the best teachers.”

“And don’t underestimate the value of ‘soft’ skills. If you can communicate well, adapt quickly, and keep learning, you’ll go far.”

Looking ahead

Florian doesn’t know exactly what his next project will be… and that’s part of the appeal.

“Every project is a new story, a new challenge. Whether it’s a stadium, a bridge, or a marine structure, what matters most is the legacy we leave behind.”

He speaks with quiet pride about building things that last, not just physically, but emotionally. “We leave traces in cities and in landscapes. That comes with a sense of responsibility: to perform at our best, to build safely, and to be proud of what we leave behind.”
