De Watergroep renewable energy facilities

Towards energy neutrality through multi-technology renewable solutions
On behalf of De Watergroep, BESIX, Perpetum Energy and Rebel Development are responsible for the development, financing, construction and operation of renewable energy facilities in Flanders with a total annual production target of 92 GWh.

Project overview

As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, De Watergroep – Flanders’ largest water company – is deploying renewable energy installations across 1,200 hectares of land and four major water retention basins. The consortium will implement a combination of wind turbines, floating and ground-mounted solar panels, and battery storage systems. All facilities are designed according to nature-inclusive principles, enhancing local ecosystems through carefully integrated landscape and biodiversity measures.

Scope of works

The consortium’s scope of works covers the full lifecycle of the renewable energy programme, including the development, financing, construction and long-term operation of multi-technology energy installations. This comprises the deployment of wind turbines, floating and ground-mounted photovoltaic systems, as well as battery storage solutions and smart energy management. All facilities are designed and delivered according to nature-inclusive principles, integrating landscape features that support biodiversity while ensuring efficient and reliable energy production.

Key highlights

  • Targeted renewable energy production of 92 GWh per year by 2030

  • Multi-technology approach combining solar, wind and energy storage

  • Nature-inclusive design incorporating meadows, amphibian ponds and bird nesting areas

  • Significant reduction in reliance on the electricity grid through prioritised self-consumption
