Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility (DMMF)

A new defence aviation hub supporting Australia’s sovereign capability
A purpose built facility enabling long term maintenance and modification of Australia’s Boeing 737 variant defence aircraft, strengthening regional skills and sovereign capability.

Project overview

The Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility (DMMF) is a major defence aviation asset designed to support the Royal Australian Air Force’s fleet of Boeing 737‑variant aircraft. Developed as an extension of RAAF Base Edinburgh, the facility allows long‑term maintenance and upgrade activities to be carried out in Australia, reducing reliance on overseas capability.

Spanning a 2.1‑hectare footprint within a 16‑hectare site provided by the South Australian Government, the project includes a four‑bay hangar measuring 240 metres long, 60 metres wide and 25 metres high, complemented by warehouses, workshops and supporting infrastructure. A dedicated tow‑way will link the facility directly to the RAAF base.

The project represents a significant investment in local industry, workforce development and long‑term regional growth. Once operational, the DMMF will provide a modern and highly specialised environment for defence aviation maintenance.

Scope of works

  • Construction of a four‑bay, large‑scale hangar capable of accommodating Boeing 737‑variant defence aircraft

  • Delivery of integrated workshops, warehousing and support facilities

  • Site development across a 2.1‑hectare project area with a dedicated tow‑way to RAAF Base Edinburgh

Key highlights

  • Major engineering milestone: Completion of four precision‑engineered hangar doors, each 48 metres wide and designed to accommodate large defence aircraft

  • Strengthening sovereign aviation capability: Enables maintenance and modification works within Australia rather than offshore

  • Local industry impact: Approximately 450 construction jobs during delivery, plus around 50 ongoing technical roles once operational

  • Regional collaboration: Strong engagement with South Australian suppliers for manufacturing, installation and cladding works

  • Efficient delivery: Advanced planning, digital tools and close collaboration are helping the project advance ahead of schedule
