IMEC Tower

A landmark for Leuven

Sector: Kantoren

Since May 2011 the BESIX-Vanhout temporary association has working on a remarkable office intended as a landmark for Leuven and an icon for the culture of innovation. The Imec tower catches your eye as you drive into Leuven along the motorway.

Imec, top research centre

The EUR 38 million contract was awarded to us by Imec, the world-class nanotechnology and nano-electronics research centre. The project includes 16 above-ground office floors in a 73 m tower, 4 underground parking levels and additional lab space (the C-building).

Hypermodern and minimalist

For an overall hypermodern and minimalist look, the client has opted for cantilever slabs with most technical installations (lighting, fire alarm, concrete core activation) enclosed directly in the poured concrete.

Complex architectural lines

For these cantilevers, over 150 tons of post-tensioning was required in order to limit the deflection. The facade is built entirely from several metre high windows with glass 'fins' providing an attractive play of lines. The tight schedule and the complexity of this office tower make this project something of a challenge for the entire team.
