Hangar doors installed and final phase ongoing for defence project in South Australia

Following the installation of four hangar doors, BESIX Watpac has entered the final chapter of the Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility (DMMF), designed for the maintenance and modification of 737‑sized military aircraft.

Installation four hangar doors

In December 2025, four large hangar doors were installed at the Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility (DMMF) in South Australia. Each door spans 48 metres, creating an opening wide enough for a Boeing 737 to pass through. Located next to RAAF Base Edinburgh, the project is being delivered for Renewal SA with BESIX Watpac continuing to progress ahead of schedule.

Precision engineering

Each doorway leads to an individual aircraft hangar. The doors are made of six individual panels assembled to create a stacking structure. Each panel is eight metres wide and 14.5 metres tall, weighing four tonnes. Designed and manufactured by specialist aircraft support engineers SAM Technology in Smithfield, New South Wales, the doors were transported more than 1,300 kilometres to the site and assembled over a four-week period.

In partnership with Renewal SA, the BESIX Watpac team continues to make strong progress on building the Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility, and we’re pleased to have completed the installation of these large bespoke hangar doors – a complex phase delivered through exceptional planning and a united team effort.

A boost for local capability

In line with BESIX Watpac’s commitment to developing regional capability, the team worked with its supplier network to engage local subcontractors for installation and cladding works.

By combining collaboration, digital construction tools and a focus on productivity, the project team is delivering this mission‑critical asset ahead of schedule and aims to maintain this momentum through to completion.

Looking ahead

In the meantime, the DMMF has entered its final chapter, with commissioning in full swing, landscaping transforming the site and client inspections underway. Construction completion is planned for mid‑2026, which is ahead of schedule. Renewal SA will then lease the facility to the Commonwealth Department of Defence for 30 years, with options for two 10‑year extensions.

This project reflects BESIX Watpac’s continued commitment to supporting Australia’s defence and aviation sectors through high‑quality infrastructure development.
