In December 2025, four large hangar doors were installed at the Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility (DMMF) in South Australia. Each door spans 48 metres, creating an opening wide enough for a Boeing 737 to pass through. Located next to RAAF Base Edinburgh, the project is being delivered for Renewal SA with BESIX Watpac continuing to progress ahead of schedule.
Each doorway leads to an individual aircraft hangar. The doors are made of six individual panels assembled to create a stacking structure. Each panel is eight metres wide and 14.5 metres tall, weighing four tonnes. Designed and manufactured by specialist aircraft support engineers SAM Technology in Smithfield, New South Wales, the doors were transported more than 1,300 kilometres to the site and assembled over a four-week period.
In line with BESIX Watpac’s commitment to developing regional capability, the team worked with its supplier network to engage local subcontractors for installation and cladding works.
By combining collaboration, digital construction tools and a focus on productivity, the project team is delivering this mission‑critical asset ahead of schedule and aims to maintain this momentum through to completion.
In the meantime, the DMMF has entered its final chapter, with commissioning in full swing, landscaping transforming the site and client inspections underway. Construction completion is planned for mid‑2026, which is ahead of schedule. Renewal SA will then lease the facility to the Commonwealth Department of Defence for 30 years, with options for two 10‑year extensions.
This project reflects BESIX Watpac’s continued commitment to supporting Australia’s defence and aviation sectors through high‑quality infrastructure development.
