Environment, one of the ESG pillars

Climate change and environmental degradation are pressing issues facing our planet.   At BESIX, we recognise the urgency of these challenges and remain firmly committed to minimising our environmental footprint and, wherever possible, creating a positive impact.  We are actively reducing our carbon footprint and waste production, striving to be a leader in the transition to a low-carbon and low-waste society and promoting sustainable solutions in the delivery of our projects.
Carbon Management

Our carbon management programme establishes a clear roadmap for reducing our carbon emissions. This not only benefits the environment but also positions us for a future with stricter regulations.

Environmental Management

At BESIX we prioritize minimising our environmental impact at every stage – design, construction, and beyond. By adhering to strict standards, promoting resource efficiency, and reducing waste, we aim to protect and preserve natural ecosystems in all the regions where we operate.

Biodiversity

Recognising the importance of healthy ecosystems, we integrate biodiversity considerations into our projects wherever possible. This helps to ensure the long-term sustainability of nature.

Circularity & Waste minimisation

At BESIX, we are actively implementing strategies that promote the efficient use of resources throughout the construction lifecycle. This minimises waste and fosters a more sustainable approach to building.

Carbon Management

Our Carbon Management Programme outlines a clear roadmap for achieving significant CO2 reductions throughout our operations and supply chain, with a first focus on Europe.

We have 3 ambitious goals for our Organisational Boundary¹:

  1. Net-Zero by 2050: We are committed to achieving net-zero emissions for our own operational activities (Scope 1 & 2) by 2050. To put this into action, we have set an ambitious interim target: a 40% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions (relative to turnover) by 2030 compared to a 2019 baseline. This target applies to all companies within our European business unit and is further cascaded down to individual companies included in our Organizational boundary ¹ with specific, measurable reduction goals.

  1. Leading the Way in Sustainable Solutions: We are dedicated to promoting and providing sustainable building solutions to our partners and clients. By sharing our expertise and resources, we empower them to achieve their own climate objectives and contribute to a greener future.

  1. Decarbonising the Supply Chain: We recognise the vital role our supply chain plays in our overall carbon footprint. We actively encourage and incentivise our partners, particularly building material producers with high emission potential, to reduce their own carbon emissions (Scope 3) and ultimately achieve net-zero by 2050.

¹ Organisational boundary: BESIX BU Europe, BESIX Nederland, BESIX Environment, BESIX Infra, BESIX Infra Support, BESIX Unitec (including its subsidiaries BESIX Unitec Automation, BESIX Unitec Nederland, BESIX Connect and Appermont Gebroeders) and Franki Foundations (including its subsidiaries Franki Grondtechnieken BV in and Atlas Fondations).

Environmental management

BESIX prioritises environmental responsibility in all its operations.   We conduct environmental impact assessments before construction, engaging local stakeholders and ecological experts to identify sensitive habitats and species. Where possible, we use nature-based solutions—like green roofs, vegetated walls, or water treatment wetlands—to protect local ecosystems. We also implement strict site management plans to minimize disturbances, and once a project is complete, we work to restore habitats to their natural state. Our approach encompasses responsible energy use, a preference for renewable energy sources, and preventing pollution.  Additionally, we are dedicated to preserving biodiversity and cultural heritage, fostering open communication with our community, and maintaining transparent environmental reporting.

Protecting biodiversity

Biodiversity loss is a critical global challenge. The construction industry, while essential, can significantly impact ecosystems. BESIX is committed to minimising its environmental footprint and protecting biodiversity.

We prioritise the preservation of natural habitats, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas like Natura 2000 sites. By integrating biodiversity considerations into our project lifecycle – from initial planning to post-construction – we can identify potential impacts early on and implement effective mitigation strategies.

Circularity & Waste minimisation

At BESIX, we prioritise waste prevention, reuse, and recycling, in line with the waste hierarchy.

We focus on the efficient and responsible use of natural resources, waste minimization, and the promotion of sustainable materials to drive the transition towards a circular economy.  Our goal is to retain the value of materials throughout their lifecycle and reduce our reliance on landfill disposal:

  • Waste hierarchy: We adhere to the waste hierarchy, giving priority to prevention, reuse, recycling, and recovery over disposal.

  • Sustainable procurement: We encourage the use of recycled materials and promote sustainable procurement practices throughout our supply chain.

  • Innovative solutions: We collaborate with clients to explore innovative approaches like urban mining, green concrete, and circular business models.

Key initiatives

Key initiatives included fleet electrification, sustainable office transitions, and innovative energy projects. These efforts underscore BESIX’s commitment to meeting its 2030 carbon reduction targets.

Clean Up Days: Fostering a Culture of Responsibility

In 2019, BESIX Foundation and the QHSE teams launched the annual Clean Up Days initiative to foster a culture of environmental responsibility. Employees worldwide participate in cleaning public spaces, demonstrating our commitment to our communities. The winning photo from the Clean Up Day competition receives a donation from our Foundation to support a charitable organization dedicated to environmental and biodiversity protection.
