R4WO is a major infrastructure project in Belgium, modernising the northern sections of Ghent’s R4 Ring Road to improve road safety, reduce congestion and promote sustainable mobility. The works cover the western stretch from the N9 in Wondelgem to the E34 in Zelzate, and the eastern section from the ‘Eurosilo’ junction in Oostakker to Wachtebeke. Overall, the project will upgrade approximately 30 kilometres of the R4.
The project focuses on safer, smoother traffic flow by reducing slip roads and directing vehicles to main intersections. New bridges, tunnels and underpasses will separate local and through traffic, while 20 kilometres of new cycle paths will encourage sustainable mobility.
A key milestone was the successful relocation of the Ringvaart Bridge in Evergem in May 2025 to a temporary bypass, ensuring uninterrupted traffic during construction. The next phase involves demolishing and rebuilding the original bridge to meet modern standards.
Delivered under a DBFM model, BRAVO4 – including BESIX and BESIX Infra – is responsible for design, build, finance and maintenance for 30 years. Franki Foundations is providing foundation works. Contract and financial close were achieved in May 2024.
Redevelopment of 22 intersections along the R4 Ring Road
Construction of new bridges, tunnels and underpasses
Creation of safe, continuous cycling infrastructure
Long-term maintenance under DBFM framework
Strategic importance: A vital upgrade to Ghent’s northern ring road, improving safety and mobility for thousands of commuters and freight traffic daily.
Enhanced liveability: Reduced slip roads, and redesigned intersections create quieter neighbourhoods and safer connections between communities.
Sustainable design: Bridges, tunnels and cycle paths integrate seamlessly into the landscape, promoting active travel and reducing environmental impact.
Long-term commitment: Delivered under a DBFM model, BRAVO4 will design, build, finance and maintain the infrastructure for 30 years, ensuring durability and quality.
Innovative financing: Recognised for its financing structure, the project received European Deal of the Year 2024 from PFI, a leading global reference in project finance.
