The Coentunnel on Amsterdam’s A10 ring road was long known as one of the most congested traffic corridors in the Netherlands. The tunnel was outdated and no longer met current safety standards. Rijkswaterstaat awarded the renovation of the existing tunnel, the construction of a second tunnel, and the (re)construction of 30 bridges and viaducts to the Coentunnel Company consortium, consisting of BESIX, TBI Bouw, CFE, Dura Vermeer, Arcadis, DEME and Vinci Construction Grands Projets.
The consortium was responsible for the design, construction and financing, and also for 30 years of maintenance. The works included tunnel engineering, construction of a new tube and renovation of the existing one. The surrounding road network was also upgraded, including motorways and 30 bridges and viaducts. In addition, the A10 was widened over 10 km from 4 to 19 lanes south of the tunnel. To minimise traffic disruption, the new tunnel was opened first so traffic could be diverted during the renovation of the old tube.
BESIX and its partners delivered this complex infrastructure programme with strong attention to safety, quality and minimising disruption. As a result, mobility across the entire region improves over the long term.
